Difference of Fermented Wine And Unfermented Wine

One day my husband was telling me that he got annoyed  to one of his colleagues who had always questioned him for not drinking wine or liquor.  In fact, that colleague gave him a text in the Bible citing that even Apostle Paul was telling Timothy to drink a little wine for his stomach pain. I understood that my husband was confiding to me so that I can give explanation to that specific verse in the Bible.  I told him  that  there are two kinds of  wine as far as I know. That is Fermented wine and  the Unfermented Wine. After that discussion, my husband turned on the computer and  made a research for that  topic.  For that reason I thought of sharing with you about these two kinds of beverage that  are considered "wine"  but entirely suggest a different meaning and effects.

Fermented Wine

A fermented wine is the kind of wine that undergo  process or method that lasts for  days and years.  A simple extract juice of grape can turn into alcoholic beverage through the process  called fermentation.  Throughout the fermentation yeast and sugars in the juice interact with each other  to produce ethanol which generally identified as ethyl alcohol, and carbon dioxide as a by-product. There are 3  general  classifications of Alcoholic beverage namely: beers, wines and spirits.

According to Dr. Sidney Cohen, a drug abuse expert,  alcohol is "the most dangerous drug on earth" .

Unfermented Wine

This kind of beverage refers simply to any juice extracted from  fruits and vegetables.  For all we know, we can make apple juice by extracting it and definitely  a very healthy beverage which is rich in  Vitamin C.  Take note, Natural Medicine today, prescribe pure extracted  juice from fruits and vegetables for alternative medication.

Personally, I believe that the wine that is cited in the Bible is totally the  unfermented wine. When Jesus made a wine in His first miracle during the wedding in Cana, definitely,  it was not the kind of wine that is fermented.
Proverbs 20:1

Trivia:  You can find more Vitamin C in the apple skin.

  1. I agree 😊Jesus did not make fermented wine at the wedding. Jesus is God, He is the word and does not contradict Himself. Proverbs 20.1.kjv Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Jesus said we ought to be "sober & vigilant" how can we do that being under the influence of fermented wine? We all know the effects of alcohol consumption- drunkeness.
The difference is clear in the two scriptures.

    1. I believe the wine was fermented because it wouldn't have been that great of a miracle if he would have just turned water into grape juice but the miracle of turning water into wine was because it was fermented instantly as opposed to taking years to ferment. Another reason it was fermented was to continue to marriage festival and keep everyone in a joyful spirit. Grape juice wouldn't have had any impact on the marriage festival at all. The sin is the abuse of fermented wine , just like the abuse of eating is glutton. A drunkard and a glutton is sinful to God but not someone who has self control and eats and drinks moderately exercising self control.

    6. Why do some people think that turning water into unfermented wine is not a great miracle. Do they know anyone that is able to do it, or for that matter have they even heard of it, or read about, I really don't think so. So turning water into unfermented wine is a spectacular miracle. Thats like say the miracle wasn't that Peter walk on water, the miracle was that Peters feet didn't get wet. Come on people. The Bible is very clear on this matter.

    7. Proverbs 20.1.kjv Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
argument for the proper use of fermented wine: Saying that being "deceived thereby" is implying that the one who already got himself drunk is not wise. It is not implying that wine is a total evil, however it is warning that it can become dangerous if you allow yourself to get drunk from it. Yes, God does not contradict himself, however, He has only stated so far that drinking wine should be done in moderation.
      Example verse:
"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit." (Ephesians 5:6)
Therefore: God is simply stating that wine should be used carefully and that it can become dangerous if you consume too much (having too much of something good can be bad for you).
second argument: now tell me something if you are claiming that wine is grape juice then aren't you twisting God's words?
And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
-Please note that Jesus produced fermented wine not grape juice, if you are asking: "Then what about the 'good wine'compared to that 'which is worse'"? Then I would answer that Jesus made the good wine that tastes good and left it for last because it is meant to be enjoyed, not to get drunk over during the first parts of the marriage. The bad wine was already used up at this point because there was no wine.
-> Also note that "good wine" does not mean grape juice nor does "bad wine", both "good wine" and "bad wine" is fermented wine, if you think otherwise then you are twisting God's word because he specifically said "wine".
---> side note to previous statement: the term "unfermented wine" is pointless to argue about in this case because no one talks about wine and says "Its grape juice!". Basically, unfermented wine is another term for grape juice, which means that it has no application in this situation because grape juice may have come from the same grapes, but it has no alcohol.
Therefore: Grape juice cannot be classified or identified as a "wine" because it does not have alcohol, that's why the term unfermented wine is used because it expresses "the lack of fermentation", which wine must have.

Now to expose the trick here...: The word wine literally means "an alcoholic drink made from fermented grape juice", so then is the "fermented wine" term necessary? No. the word "Wine" itself claims that it has alcoholic contents inside of it. So the terms "Fermented wine" and "unfermented wine" is pointless because Fermented wine = wine, while unfermented wine = plain grape juice. Also God wrote the Bible so there is no way that he would put grape juice in place of wine. So... wine is not grape juice that has no alcohol in it.

    10. Unfermented wine is grape juice. Wine is wine! You take the alcohol out of the wine then it ceases to be wine. The Bible mentions “Wine” not once does it say unfermented wine... Drinking wine is not the sin. The sin is drunkenness.

  2. For you clear insight,i like to once and for ever abolish your idea about the verses mentioned in the bible about wine that was quoted by paul. When ever you see wine in the bible,it is accompanied by bread(Bread typifies Lord's body that has been made out of form at the calvary and wine typifies his pure divine sinless blood). And,what paul was saying is that taking wine(remebering Jesus blood sacrifice ,1Chorinthian 11:25)is to recall that he shed his blood for you and by taking the wine you are declaring his health and forgiveness of sins. The wine that typifies His blood is for us to consume to remember that we are forgiven, made righteous, pure, holy, redeemed from every curse not by our efforts but by His blood. So,take wine in the manner Jesus said us to take and not as general.it is a divine format to health.

  3. The Word of God never talks against wine. As a matter of fact , the drinking of wine and strong drink is commanded in Deut.14 and 12. The Bible however does repeatedly warn against misuse. Thus God does not contradict Himself. In Numbers it is stated that he who does not drink wine is accordingly not allowed to enjoy any fruit of the vine, which there is stated as not even grapes, fruit juice or raisins! More clearer than that you cannot be. Scholars who attempt to justify wine by twisting it to unfermented "wine", must know that "unfermented" is not even a proper English word, and secondly the same word for wine is used throughout the Bible when reference is made of wine. If so, then how can one become drunk/intoxicated/act like a fool, if it was not wine being fermented from grapes containing alcohol? No, rest assured, wine is wine and grape juice is grape juice. The drive to veer people away from liquor, with all its drawbacks, is flawed. Jesus says that he who does partake in His blood ,( through drinking wine as symbolic of His blood), has no life in them self. Thus those who so eagerly preach against wine must know that they (may) preach something that is keeping others from having communion with God and Jesus Christ - something I don't want to be guilty of.

  5. Yes, the wine that Jesus made could have been the type we’re used to. That type uses yeast to convert grape juice into, so called, wine containing alcohol. However, it does raise some suspicion as to why the bible ties the use of yeast with sin:
1 Corinthians 5:6 Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
I’m curious, does the bible ever label any drink or use the term grape juice? From Bro. John Slack

if it says wine, then it means alcoholic!

    1. In very early centuries, people were already accustomed to pressing out the juice of grapes for immediate consumption. We can see this in GENESIS 40:11: ""And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.""

    2. That verse does specify grape juice, however, what does this have to do in relation to the argument that Jesus made water into WINE? nothing. Just because pharaoh drank grape juice does not mean that Jesus made water into grape juice... Therefore, your argument is invalid because John 2: 1-10 (wedding of Cana) specifically states that Jesus turned the water into wine and the literal definition of wine is "an alcoholic drink made from fermented grape juice". So if you argue that its grape juice then your twisting God's word. let me ask you somethings that confirm this...
1.) WHO IS THE AUTHOR OF THE BIBLE?
2.) IF IT IS GOD and He is not the AUTHOR OF CONFUSION, then why would he state wine in place of grape juice when they clearly have a significant difference?
3.) SINCE GOD IS THE AUTHOR OF THE BIBLE... WHY WOULD HE STATE ONE THING AND THEN CONTRADICT IT?
Therefore: If you think its still grape juice then its just like saying: "God didn't really mean.... (wine)", which is ridiculous because whatever God COMMANDS, STATES, or NOTES CANNOT contradict itself or He would no longer be God because He would be lying, which we know GOD CANNOT LIE. Therefore, since God is ALWAYS TRUE TO HIS WORDS AND PICKS THEM SPECIFICALLY, I again ask why do you think that wine is grape juice in the wedding of Cana?
Conclusion: Therefore, it is insignificant to state that the people of Egypt knew how to make grape juice because God specifically states in the scriptures (or if you want to credit John, just remember that the spirit inspired him to wright the words that God told him to write...) that Jesus turned water into WINE, so to ignore this factor would be to contradict what God actually said (basically since your not the author of the Bible you have NO RIGHT to edit GOD'S words ever).

    Wine in the New Testament

In the New Testament, references to what are clearly intoxicating beverages, occur for the most part in connection with those groups of people who had been brought into the Christian faith in Asia-Minor, Greece and Rome. This was at a time when morals were low and indulgence in alcoholic drinks excessive. In the Gospels there are only two definite allusions to intoxicating beverage. The first is surely significant. It occurs in the opening chapter of the Gospel of Luke, in the announcement made to Zacharias of the forthcoming birth of the herald of the Messiah.

""For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost ..." "LUKE 1:15

References in the Epistles to drunkenness are numerous and explicit. Paul was the Apostle to the Gentiles and he was frequently confronted with excessive drinking even within the young Christian congregations where the converts were either Jews living in non-Jewish environments, or Gentiles brought in from paganism with their heathen ways of life.

On a number of occasions Paul had to rebuke his listeners in no uncertain terms: ""Let us walk honestly ... not in rioting and drunkenness"" (ROMANS 13:13). He warned that among the offences which will exclude men from the Kingdom of God is drunkenness: ""Be not deceived ... nor drunkards ... shall inherit the kingdom of God"" (1 CORINTHIANS 6:9-10). Again he pointed out the right course to the Ephesians, ""And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit ..."" (EPHESIANS 5:18). The Galatians, too, needed the warning that those who indulge in ""drunkenness, revellings, and such like ... shall not inherit the kingdom of God"" (GALATIANS 5:21).

A Little Wine for your Stomach's Sake

""Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities."" 1 TIMOTHY 5:23

The word used here in the original Greek text is "oinos" and can mean fermented or unfermented grape juice.

The pain relieving properties of grape juice were a well known fact in those days in Palestine, and it was also used to relieve stomach problems. For this reason, Paul recommended the use of grape juice to Timothy. Athenaeus (280 A.D.) supplies the information that there was a "wine" for stomach complaints. He gives the recipe - "Let him take gleukos either mixed with water or warmed, especially that called "protropos", as being very good for the stomach." This is also backed up by numerous medical discoveries that alcohol actually prolongs stomach problems. Although alcohol provides calories, it does not contain protein, minerals or vitamins and can cause serious damage to the important tissues of the brain, liver and other organs of the body.
Taking all the assertions of the Bible on "alcohol" into consideration, we realise that God also disapproves of "moderate" drinking, to save His people from destructive influences.

It is interesting to see that the newest medical discoveries are exactly in accordance with the Bible:

"Being stone-drunk permanently destroys up to 7 million cells of an adult's brain."

Prof. Dr. Gustav Schimert, (Cardiology Magazine, 1984)

"Alcohol always destroys brain cells - even when taken in small amounts."

Dr. Med. A. Sequeira, (Med. News Magazine, 1984)

""Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are."" 1 CORINTHIANS 3:16-17

    3. Actually Alcohol would have to literally kill you in order to kill brain cells... and those are some old sources from years ago. But besides that I think you forgot something more important. You forgot the fact that wine IS FERMENTED GRAPE JUICE. So the properties to the stomach would literally be the same (unless of course you are drunk then you will have the reverse effects). Also stating that Oinos could mean both fermented or unfermented is wrong because the word literally translated to just "wine".
      - https://billmounce.com/greek-dictionary/oinos --> a good source with the actual definition rather than a lukewarm in between limbo.
      - https://www.brainhq.com/brain-resources/brain-facts-myths/brain-mythology/brain-myth-alcohol-kills-brain-cells --> good link for stating that the amount of alcohol that must be consumed would have to literally kill you in order to be enough to kill brain cells.

Remember what I stated earlier... Oinos means "wine"... The meaning of wine literally is: "an alcoholic drink made from fermented grape juice".
Also note that every verse you quoted besides Luke 1:15 refers to those whom are drunk or are drunkards, it doesn't forbid drinking wine, it just simply states that becoming drunk is wrong. (basically it is possible to drink wine responsibly without becoming drunk).
Specifically addressing Luke 1:15... Basically, this only applies to John because this is the only time in the Bible God specifically states that anyone would be restricted "For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink". However, note that this is referring to John's entire future lifestyle because he lived in the wilderness, so this is not a specific command to us that drinking wine moderately is sin. It is a simple statement God makes to Zachariah about the future of his son's life.

Now... if you don't drink wine to avoid drunkeness then thats fine! God never said you had to drink wine, but he did not say that you cannot drink it either as long as you don't get drunk. Now if anyone reading this had problems with alcohol additions I would suggest staying away from it period just for your own health. But don't antagonize something God never meant to be antagonized in the first place.

Also unfermented grape juice does not stop stomach viruses...
Source: First, it’s important to know what we’re talking about when we talk about “stomach flu.” What most people know as stomach flu is an infection of one of several viruses (usually norovirus or rotovirus). These viruses cause gastroenteritis, which affects the intestines and has symptoms like diarrhea, cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever. The infections are no fun to experience, and the viruses that cause them are notoriously hard to kill. Unfortunately, grape juice won’t do the trick.

So what about the antiviral properties of grapes? There’s some scientific evidence supporting that part of the grape juice theory, but it’s about 40 years old, and it’s never been tested (or proven) in humans. Snopes points to reviews of a 1970s study, and shows that science hasn’t progressed much in the realm of grapes as anti-viral agents in the years since.

When all else fails to stop the vomiting, sipping a small amount (less than 4 oz.) of red wine may help. Packed with antioxidants, it can do a powerful clean sweep of your digestive tract. During a bout of uncontrollable vomiting, a friend of mine needed to be admitted to the hospital. Surprisingly, the remedy that his doctor prescribed was red wine. After a few sips of red wine, the urge to vomit quickly subsided and his IV rehydration began to work.

  10. All comments were interesting. And all comments had some info and Scripture that helped in many ways.
I believe the Bible. I believe Jesus is God. That said...
I get frustrated with people who constantly debate over 1 or 2 Biblical words when the entire subject is ignored. Drinking alcohol is considered ccontrollable" and right by all alcoholics. Those with common sense realize that any drug (and yes, alcohol is a drug) can have drawbacks. Anything done "in excess" is foolish and Anti-biblical. God wants us to be sensible. Everything he quotes in The Bible demands we be sensible in whatever we do.
Logic says we need to be cautious in drinking or else we will become drunk or drunkards which is Anti-biblical.
When you drink alcohol it numbs your senses and you no longer can be sensible. So logic says pour your tiny drink if you're going to drink a small amount of wine and put the bottle away, where it cannot be reached in temptation, and then have your tiny glass of wine, if it's supposed to help your stomach and don't try to drink any more.
My mother, when she was dying of stomach and liver cancer, was told to have a small glass of wine every night to help her body gain weight. She followed orders and had fewer issues with her chemo.
Communion is a holy "meal" with our Lord and a requested (by Jesus Himself) "remembrance" of the wondrous gift He gave of Himself for each of us. Some feel it necessary to use "wine" and others use juice. Either way, we are remembering our Lord. It is not a full meal but simply a small portion that we use in doing this. It cannot get someone drunk. I myself prefer juice. But it's My preference. I don't push mine on others.
I think all this arguing is redundant. We should instead remember the words over-indulgence, drunkard and the fact that our bodies are the temples God has created in order for us to worship Him. We need to do what is right to take care of our bodies. Arguing small details is not going to do that.
Actions speak louder than words. Let your words show your thoughts and live your thoughts for Christ. Carolyn

Therefore it could be rendered that the word was 'a' God, which changes the meaning significantly. Definitely not proof that Jesus is God. He definitely didn't pray to himself, logically and as scripture attests, he was God's firstborn creation, or his son.

  19. Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants' sakes, that I may not destroy them all. (Isaiah 65:8)
Are the grapes in the cluster fermented? If not, then the Bible rightly calls unfermented grape juice wine.

  21. Exodus 12:15
Seven days shall you eat unleavened bread; even the first day you shall put away yeast out of your houses, for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel (Promised Land or Coming Kingdom).
Grape juice is a symbol of blood and is so stated in Scripture.
Would not the “days” of “unleavened” include both bread and drink?
